i can't believe its done...
About 1 1/2 months ago I thought that it would be fun to learn about css and create my own template for my blog. I never realized how incredibly hard it would be. From the layout, to the graphic design, most everything I made looked like crap. Then I purchased a nice book that gave me a complete understanding of html and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets.) After many sleepless nights, and much trial and error, I have created what you see before you. Its nothing special, compared to many of the sites out there that I am completely lost as to how they made them, but its MINE!
Ahhh well... I originally set out to make a 3 column layout, cuz its all the rave. I actually had a working model on my test blog. but what I found is that I didn't have enough information/links or what i like to call "clutter" to fill up 2 side columns and the main blog. So i decided finally after about 3 weeks of off and on attempts of the three column to just do the two column. Then I happened along a wonderful site that had a Photoshop tutorial on how to do textures. The guy's name is Vared and his site is TEXTURA. Thats where I came up with the idea for my banner and navbar picture. They turned out pretty darn good, even if i do say so my self.
After I had it all set and ready to implement into The Gambit. I realized that I was going to really need a better commenting system. Blogger's was simply too slow, and there was no cuztomizing. Not to mention there is no managing feature and no trackback, so off I went hunting and I came up with a nifty program for blogs called Haloscan. Check it out. I really like it. Then I got a better site meter and I was set. Time for the crossover. Time to put my piece of art out there for the world to see.
Hopping around the house. Excited that I finally finished. Erin sits down at the computer. She pulls up my site on Internet Explorer and..... "Dan come here!"
I came in.... "AHHHHHH CRAP!"
little to my knowledge, my site looked GREAT in Mozilla Firefox, but it was EVERYWHERE and UGLY in IE! IE is only the most used browser in the world... so i had a HUGE problem. I didn't know where to begin. my columns were all messed up. My text was WAY offline. It was a total disaster. so i took a break for a couple of hours, I posted on blogger forums to see if anyone would help. I waited... waited... waited... no replies. My ship was sunk. Then I thought that i might give it one more try to see if i didn't do something wrong, misspell something etc... well, i found some mistakes in the coding, i noticed that my columns were all turned around, (Firefox didn't have a problem with it, but IE did) so i fixed that. Still couldn't get the navcolumn to snap to the top of the page... then it was as if the good Lord decided to give me devine insight. I saw it. It just jumped out to me. "position:absolute;" that is what was missing. BLING! It works now in both IE and Firefox and most other browsers! Yippie!
Just makes me smile... its true though... (prov 2:1-6) that if you dig long enough you'll find it!
So what do you all think? I want suggestions and comments. How's the coloring? Is it easy to read? What do you like and don't like? don't hold anything back! this is a WIP (Work In Progress.)
Okay thats it. Posts will come much more frequently now that i have something that I like posting to. Thanks everyone for sticking with me.
Cheers!
